Facial Recognition Consent
Last updated: Oct 12, 2026
What this covers
Photos of You is an optional feature that finds photos of you in the albums of Rumor events you attended. This page explains what happens to facial data when it is used.
Your choice
You don’t have to agree. If you decline, Photos of You is unavailable and nothing else about your account changes. To use it, agree when the app asks, or turn on Photos of You in Settings. You can turn it off at any time.
What we collect
When you turn on Photos of You, you take a selfie in the Rumor app. From it we create a face signature, a mathematical representation of your facial geometry. Under the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (740 ILCS 14) and similar state laws, a face signature is a biometric identifier. Photographs on their own are not.
We keep your selfie while Photos of You is on, so we can search the albums of new events you attend without asking you for another one. We store it encrypted and use it for nothing else.
To make album photos searchable, we also create face signatures from the faces in photos uploaded to an event’s album. These are not linked to anyone’s identity. They are only used to find a match when a guest who has agreed to this consent searches that album.
How it works
Photos of You only searches albums of events where you are a confirmed guest. Each search is limited to one event’s album, and Rumor does not keep a platform-wide database of faces. Results are shown only to you: hosts and other guests are not notified, and nothing is labeled or tagged on any photo. If a result isn’t you, select “Not me” and it won’t be shown again.
Who processes it
We use Amazon Rekognition, a service of Amazon Web Services, to create and compare face signatures on our behalf. Amazon is contractually restricted from using them for any other purpose. We use no other biometric vendor. Our service providers are listed on our Subprocessors page.
We do not sell it
Rumor does not sell, lease, trade or otherwise profit from biometric data, and does not disclose it to hosts, brands or anyone else except Amazon Rekognition as described above, or as required by law.
How long we keep it
- Your face signature for an event: kept for up to 3 years after the event ends. Deleted sooner if you turn off Photos of You or if the album or event is removed.
- Your selfie: removed within 30 days of turning off Photos of You, and never kept longer than one year from when you took it. After that, the app asks for a new selfie.
- Face signatures from album photos: deleted when the photo is removed from the album, when the album or event is removed, or 3 years after the event ends, whichever comes first.
Deletion is permanent and applies to the copies held by Amazon Rekognition.
Your consent
By agreeing, you consent to Rumor and Amazon Rekognition collecting, storing and using your face signature and selfie as described here. We record the date, time and version of this consent each time it applies to an event. You can request confirmation of what facial data we hold, or ask us to delete it, in the app or at support@therumor.com.
Eligibility
Photos of You is available to members 18 and older located in the United States.
This page is intended to comply with the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (740 ILCS 14) and comparable state biometric privacy laws. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal information more generally.
